AI Moat
Durable advantage from adopting AI responsibly — when the models themselves are available to everyone.
Data · Domain expertise · Workflow integration · Controls · Adoption
What it is
When powerful AI models are widely accessible, advantage shifts to what surrounds them: proprietary context, domain judgment, integration into real work, trustworthy governance, and people who actually use the tools well.
Why it matters
Access to AI alone is unlikely to differentiate. How responsibly and effectively it is woven into decisions and workflows can.
How to cultivate it
- Start with a real workflow problem, not a technology.
- Pair AI with domain experts who can judge its output.
- Build controls — review, privacy, accountability — in from the beginning.
Where it can fail
- Assuming a model or API is itself a moat.
- Deploying without oversight and losing trust after an error.
- Using data without appropriate consent or care.
Examples
- The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology published a voluntary AI Risk Management Framework to help organizations manage AI risks and build trustworthy systems. — NIST AI Risk Management Framework
